Hair Loss

Hair Loss in the form of male pattern baldness, is the most common cause of hair loss in men.

There are several therapies available for the treatment of this condition, with 5-alpha reductase inhibitors and minoxidil  most commonly used. Other current treatment options include laser therapy, scalp microneedling, hair mesotherapy, and hair transplantation. The development of new pharmacologic therapies has been slow; however, research is currently being conducted using Janus kinase inhibitors and autologous platelet-rich plasma injections.

What causes hair loss?

Male pattern baldness occurs when hair follicles on the head convert the male hormone testosterone into another hormone called dihydrotestosterone (DHT).

Affected follicles become more sensitive to DHT, causing them to shrink, weaken, and eventually die. This slows down hair production and can stop hair growth altogether.

Other causes of hair loss can include illness, stress or chemotherapy. Hair loss arising from these causes can ony be addressed by eliminating the cause.  In some of these cases, hair loss is temporary. We advise you speak to your GP if you experience sudden hair loss.

Regaine® has proven to be an effective non-prescription hair loss treatment for both men and women, with a success rate of 80%. Regaine’s main active ingredient, Minoxidil, encourages blood flow to the hair follicles and increases follicular size, helping to prevent further hair loss and initiate hair growth.
